Similar student video

Our teacher showed us this video from a previous year, they used a similar concept to us in that the girls are preparing to go out to a club. They also had a short dance sequence that we will also have. I think I costumes and makeup in this video make it very visual and more enjoyable to watch, however the camera angles and shots are more limited than we will use.

digipak research

In our group we each researched digipaks of artists similar and different. below are the presentations that we created.
The first focuses more on similar bands like The Saturdays.

Here is a more general one that frankie created based on a wide variety of artists.

This one is based on artist similar to Sweet Nothing..

Here is one that focuses on Similar artists albums and singles it goes into detail on a selection of different Digipaks by the same artist. all similar to Sweet Nothing.

Record Label research.

In order to make our digipak look professional, we had to include a record label. this would be included on both our album and our website. we needed to identify who our record label was so that we could state who had the theoretical rights to our music. Frankie did some research into the record labels of bands similar to ours like Little Mix, Neon Jungle and M.O. She descovered that both little mix and neon jungle both were under the same record label, Sony Music Entertainment, as both of these bands have very similar styles to ours we though that it would make sense if they were to be the label our band was listed under.
Little Mix are also with a company called SYCO this is owned by Simon Cowell, but as we werent formed from a talent show or any other talent competition it would not fit our band to be under this as well.
Neon Jungle are with RCA records they release a range of different music from country to pop. Looking through some of their other artists we found that our band would fit well within this record label, so we also chose to go with this.

Magazine research and changes made

Magazines are an important product to an artist, without them audiences wouldn't be as familiar with them, they would also struggle to connect with them as other than tv and online they wouldn't know much about the band on a personal level. Before creating our magazine article, it is essential that we research into which which magazine is suitable for our target audience
Frankie has taken on the responsibility of creating the magazine article, this was because out of all of us she is the only one that still studdies english language, it also helped that she wanted to go into a career around journalism. We were considering choosing the magazine 'Company' for our interview as we found out that it appeals to a younger audience than Cosmopolitan but still shares the same features however after researching into it we found they stopped producing it last year.
We then thought that Cosmopolitan would be good to choose as Frankie reads it said they often show interest into the latest fashion and music which is what our band portrays.
Instead of an article we are going to make an interview in order for our fans to get to know us better which is important for any new artist.
After doing further research we found that Cosmopolitan magazine is not suitable for our target audience as it is aimed at adult women. So we had to focus our research on teenage UK pop magazines. We found BLISS which is UK based and suitable for our target audience but the last issue was produced in July 2014.
Seventeen is a magazine perfect for a new upcoming teenage pop band but it is produced in America which is unsuitable for a new band as they have to become well known in their home country before going international.
Frankie then found 'Shout' Magazine which is suitable for our target audience, UK based and still being produced so we went with this one.

Group Timetable

Here is an image of our group time table this was created to show when (during school hours) we were free, we created a couple of these as out availability was constantly changing due to jobs and clubs. The image shows the latest one, this is of the deadline week. We also used colours and codes to make it easier to understand. For example the :) smiley face represents when we are all free and going to work on the project. in black pen our names are written this is showing when we are each individually free, in some periods more than one person would be available, we arranged it so that when ever possible only one person at a time would be working on the one thing meaning everyone was doing something and we would be able to complete it quicker. The person who is due to come in in the period their name is shown, is highlighted in green the other is free to spend time on other subjects. Also written in the boxes next to the names in pink lettering is the name of the task that has been set by us as a group, for example under the smile on Tuesday it states that we would be working on 'website changes' and the 'Digipak' this was very helpful as it meant that we didn't acidentaly spend more time on one thing and neglect the others. At the very bottom of the sheet it states when then deadlines are and what they are for, this was helpful as it showed exactly how long we had to work on things.

updates and changes made to our website

We added a sign up page in order to keep our fans interacting with our band and to make sure that they are always kept up to date as this is an important factor

photoshoot inspiration (little mix)

After a group discussion we decided that we needed some different photos to use for our website and digipak. This was because the images that we had didn't really unite us as a band and as they were taken at the start we were now more sure on what we had to do to make them successful.

We researched possible poses that we could do in order to make this look successful, we came across this one from little mixs newest album 'Get Weird' we took inspiration form Little Mix because they are a youthful, girly, pop band similar to ours. We liked this photo because they are positioned close to each other so look united but they are all posing differently which portrays their individual identities within the band which is what we want to portray. We also liked how they are sitting on a sofa as this looks relaxed an friendly.

This is one of our photos from this photoshoot which we edited and used as one of the panels for our digipak.

Digipak

After a lot of research we decided that our digipak is going  to be colourful and bright. this is to represent who we are as a band. we also wanted it to contain synergy throughout our music videos and our website. As a band we not only have one colour to unite us but one to represent us each individually. On our Digipak we wanted to show these, so that our audience could then further relate them to the artists. We took influence for this from artists like JLS where each member is represented by a colour. as you can see in the collage below they are often seen wearing their colours this is so that the public becomes more aware of them the more they see them. the colours they wear are also reflected on their album covers (bottom right) and merchandise. We attempted to represent something similar to this. on their album cover you can see that they are all united as a band by them wearing the same shade clothing and facing the same way, they all have the same expression and framing. although they aren't shown in their colours the audience know who is associated with what colour, we wanted our audience to be able to do this.
Here is the first draft of our digipak it is incomplete as it is only the first draft, as you can see we have used three main colours throughout the digipak these were Purple to unite us as a band as it is the colour associated with sweet nothing. Pink as the colour associated with Sophie the girly member of the group (myself), Orange the colour associated with Frankie the edgy member of the group, and Blue the colour associated with Liv the sassy member of the group.

Website Feedback

In class this week we held back from all of the editing, photoshop-ing and website making and looked over everything we had done in our groups and everything everyone else had done and gave everyone feedback on it all. We Looked at everything individually picking out points for improvement and things we each thought were going really well.
We looked at all of the websites, here is the feedback that we received based on our website as of the 1/12/15 (based on the feedback we have decided to make some changes).

Here is all of the feedback based on what went well about the website...

-   Love the website, lots of work has been put into it which shows. I like the extra girls tab with band info. This is very effective because it lets the target users feel more involved and its more personal.
-   I like the homepage, makes the band look really good
-   I like the merchandise, good variety
-   I like the animations used throughout the website
-   Very good layout and the photo on the front is good.I like the way the name of there band appears.Very good movement on the other pages.
-   Good in depth information about each individual artist.
-   I like the gallery and it suits the genre very well.
-   The front page for the Sweet Nothing website is very clear and easy to use with a good quality photograph that gives a clear band image.
-   The countdown to when the music video is released is a good touch and looks professional.
-   The page where there is information about the band members is excellent with profiles on each member gives the viewer extra information about the band and this gives everyone a better idea about the band.
-   The gallery has a number of high quality photographs which are good because they show how the music was made.
-   The tour dates page is very good because it links you to Ticketmaster and this is a good touch because it looks professional.
-   I think that the Sweet Nothing website is the best one so far as it looks the most professional.
-   The sassy photo is cheeky and fun
-   *The page links to the other and is charming and joyful.Would it kill for some background on these saucy ladies. C'mon ladies
-   The moving background on the tour page is witty and clever. It brings sparkle to an otherwise mediocre tour page.
-   The gallery is short but efficient. The photos should vary in location and perhaps add some details girls.
-   I am pleasantly surprised by the store page which was solid in all areas.
-   This is a very professional looking website and has good use of the countdown towards the music video release which i think looks effective.
-    'The Girls' page is very good with the use of changing pictures when you hover over and also information on the girls when you click the pictures.
-   The picture on the front page looks very real and easy to believe they are a girl group rather than just 3 randoms doing a media project.
-   As soon as you open the page you are immediately drawn to the background as the photo of the girls stands out through the use of the flash effects on it.
-   I enjoy the moving background on each of the pages and i also think its very clever how the images change on 'The Girls' page when you scroll over them. This helps show the bands image very well, portraying the quirky characters they are.
-   The home page is very effective, especially the picture of the group which is very high quality.
-   I like the countdown clock on the home page.
-   The girls page using the rollover images is a very nice effect
-   The gallery has very well taken images
-   Like the home page because it's really simple but eye catching and girly which already conveys the type of girl group they are.
-   The countdown is a nice extra.
-   The page for the girls' bios is really effective. Bio's all make sense.
-   The background looks good.
-   Links to all their social media pages along the top is good.
-   Their store is good and works well.

Here is the feedback based on what we could improve on...

-   Need to finish 'Our music' page.
-   Merchandise doesn't fit the target user, too boring, needs more colour.
-   M
oving background takes the focus away from actual website, maybe change the opacity of the colour to take the attraction away.
- Colour needs to match digipak more.(Really good website though.)
-   The store can be improved I think in the sense of the cart and maybe a discount?
-   The countdown on the front page should be larger and draw more attention but overall an overwhelming website page.
-   The girls page is clever and inventive apart from Frankie photo which is a different quality and needs improvement.*
-   Social media aspects are good but the insta could use more pictures. FB is blocked so no comment.
-   Gallery needs improving but store makes up for it.
-
I would critise the 'our music' page as they say the music video is on the page but it is a default video.
-   'Our music' page needs to be completed
-   Store needs more work with more detailed items
-   Tour Dates page is very basic
-   'Our Music' page is incomplete.
-   There needs to be information on each member of the band other than just pictures of them, other than that there's nothing wrong with it!

We then gave them a mark out of 10, here is what people gave ours...

Promotion

In the days leading up to the release of our music video we wanted to use our social media accounts to really build a buzz about it. We looked at ways different artists do this as found that Justin Beiber used this technique for his single 'what do you mean?'.
We chose to use to this to promote 'Light Me Up' we asked our friends to pose with the poster with the #lightmeup to encourage people to talk about it on Twitter and instagram.

Track List

We took inspiration from the bands i had already researched and their albums; Little Mix, The Saturdays and Neon Jungle. They all had a different number of songs on their first album, we decided to go with 12 as it is still a lot of songs which allows our audience to really get to know our sound and decide if they like it or not. we tried to not make the names of the songs to complex so they still appeal to our audience. after further researching we found that these were not all suitable, therefore we changed a few of these and included one feature track Te Amo ft Soraya. we believed this would help to widen our audience as we are a new band by teaming up with another artist.

MTV interview

We filmed this interview for MTV to allow our fans to find out more about us and give them more information about the upcoming video. It allowed out audience to get to know the band members better and see more of their quirky personalities.

Biographies

As i was in charge of creating the website, this was based on us sorting the roles into who would be most suitable for each one, and as i did two weeks of work experience in a web design company it worked out that out of our group i was probably the member that knew more about audiences and the types of things to include already.
After doing research into girl bands website's we found that a lot of the websites included pages representing each of the girls, showing their different personalities which allow's the audience to get to know them individually rather than just by a name. Various questions and pictures where shown on these pages. We decided we would do something similar so I came up with a selection of questions, taking influence from bands such as little mix and the saturdays i then asked the other group members to answer them in the role of their band member, I then tweaked their answers so that they were consistent and suitable for the website, here are the questions i asked:

Where did you grow up?

How did you get into singing?

who is your style inspiration?

what are your nicknames?

what is your favorite food?

What is your favorite colour?

Who are your favorite musicians?

What are your favorite movies?

what are your favorite songs?

who is your musical inspiration?

funniest little mix moment?

Favorite saying?

Jake Wynne

Our year group had a talk with a music director called Jake Wynne, he has worked with a range of artists such as Girls Aloud Jakes's top tips included things such as...
Make sure you emphasising the 'performance bed', this basically means you have a layer of a few performances of the band/artist singing the whole dong so that you can then add all the other stuff on top but a least you're covered and get and idea of the whole structure, Dynamism and not giving away all your tricks early on, build slowly and make everyone want to keep watching.
he suggested we looked at a website where you can make your own music videos for people http://www.radarmusicvideos.com/home/about-us

Merchandise

This is one of the products that you can buy from our store as part of our merchandise. It is a set of love heart sweets, these are a sweet that are associated with our band, therefore we thought that it would be appropriate for it to be included as one of our promotional products. It features the Sweet Nothing Kiss and the band name.
This is another one of our products, this item comes in two colours black and white, it comes in a non gender specific size meaning that both our male and female fans can purchase this. It features our S(weet) N(othing) logo in the top right left corner (right on photo). The colour of the logo is inverted from the colour of the jumper. This makes it stand out and contrast to the jumper making it more visible.

Digipak design

Here is a photograph of the digipak that Olivia designed in class today. It shows all of the things that a digipak should include she has clearly labelled these. it also shows possible designs that could work in context to our theme.

Production Diary

20/9/15
Today we pitched our ideas to our group, unfortunately none of our ideas were suitable, this is because all of the songs we chose had music videos for them which meant that we couldn't do them.
So we then spent the rest of the lesson looking at other songs that don't have a music video and found these two, one was a remixed version of the one that olivia had already chosen (hers was very the heavy metal version which would be quite hard to create a video for)  the other was simply one that we could picture a video for and that we thought was doable.

21/9/15:
Today we pitched our ideas to the class and received feedback based on what the class thought on our ideas and what they thought we could do with the song.

The pitch
We played the first minute of the song Mind over matter to our class to give them an idea of what we were going to do. we then showed the class what we thought we could do in our music video, including lights and the look we would go for. We then played the other song we had called Light Me Up by Parade we then said about how we would do the same type of thing but due to the audience we would make the video younger so that it suited the popier feel.

The feedback
Everyone in our class gave us feedback from our ideas, the main concern they had was that the Mind over matter song, although the song is originally from a band, due to it only having one main female artist it would be hard to make the other two people in the band not look awkward or uncomfortable like they didn't quite fit in. Most of the class preferred the second song, they agreed that they both had the same amount of potential but as different things the PVRIS song as a solo artist, whereas the Parade song as a group. they all really liked our idea for the narrative and the themes and locations, one member of our class Marcus also made a point that we hadn't realised, that the lyrics to the video Light me up worked with the theme of lights, as they are both about lights we could play with that idea.

The result
From this we decided that we were going to take forward our second choice Light me up. This was because it gave us more to play around with being a group song and it worked better alongside the ideas we had already. We decided to still go with the same look but make everyone's a little different, for example when it comes to using the UV light we could each have a colour theme so we could have liv in a pink/blue floral pattern like this...

we could then have Frankie in a different floral pattern like this green and pink one...
and then i could wear a more orange and green colour...
23/9/2015
We sat down and discussed what we were going to need in our music video and how we were going to make it achievable we started to discuss locations and where we are going to film, we looked at different shots and began to talk about who and what we would need. Olivia wrote a basic props list.
24/9/2015
After looking at where we were going to film yesterday we decided that today we were going to see if we can work out who we would need to use in our music video. we looked at numbers and tried to work out weather we could make it look realistic with the amount of people that we are able to get hold of. we then looked more into our band image and possible names for our band.
25/9/2015
in class today we researched our band image, Frankie began to create a presentation on our individual looks in comparison to other female pop artists. I began to create our steal o matic, this was so that we can get an idea of the different types of shots that we are going to use, i tried to include clips from videos that were very similar to ours this was so that it didn't look as odd. Olivia began to design rough outfits that we could wear for our music videos.

28/9/2015
Today we all got together and looked into the band name even more we looked at similar bands and tried to get influence on our decision.

2/10/15
Today Pete Fraser and Jake Wynne came in to talk to us. Pete Fraser is the chief examiner of OCR A level Media Studies and he gave us top tips on how to get the best grade in our A2 media coursework which was very helpful. One of his students from many years ago, Jake Wynne, is now a music video director and editor. He told us about his experiences in the industry and how he got to where he is now which i found very interesting. He gave each group constructive criticism on our music video ideas and becuase ours is quite a fast paced song he told us to not put loads of effects and fast cuts in from the beginging and to make it more gradual. He aslo did a fun filming activity with us where we had to shoot an interpretation of Robbie Williams' 'Let Me Entertain You'. This allowed us to get a feel for what fiming music videos are like. We had five different cameras rolling at once and 15 people on set for each time we shot the video.
5/10/15
Today was the day of our photo shoot, we shot it inside our greenroom. we took over 700 photos. We dressed in all black but different style clothes in order to keep a theme going.
6/10/15
Today in class we went through the photos that we took yesterday and selected all of the good ones. we also created an Instagram account along with a twitter, we tweeted our first tweet as a band. click the button to see them...
Instagram
https://twitter.com/?lang=en-gb
7/10/15
Today I continued with the steal o matic whilst Frankie and Olivia went through the photos researching out digipak
8/10/15
Today we looked at shots we were going to get for our filming tomorrow in the green room, we drew out some ideas and talked about the effects and costumes.
9/10/15
Today we filmed the first few shots for our music video. We wore a mix of black and denim clothing, but we all still looked different from each other so to carry on our individual personalities within the band. We took this outfit inspiration from one of M.O's outfits in their music video to the song 'Preach' which we really liked. We filmed all the shots in front of a green screen because for some shots in our music video we are going to use lots of After effects to make our video like edgy and impressive.
12/10/15
Today in the lesson, Frankie began to edit some of the shots we had filmed from last Friday. I carried on with the Steal-o-matic, researching similar music videos and types of shots that would work well in our video, and Olivia started to draw different shot ideas on a storyboard.
13/10/15
Today we filmed out scenes in the drama studio, we used lights facing the camera to give a more intense feel, it made the performers (us) look powerful, it also looked really fun and went with the theme of lights, relating to our song (light me up). We filmed all our footage on 5 cameras, one directly opposite at a high angle two others either side of that at slightly lower angles and one to the far right getting a very low side on angle.
The fith camera was then left in the hands of Issy Payne, who was in charge of getting the close up and moving shots. She was on a movable chair swooping from side to side capturing the atmosphere of the performance.
Because the footage is very dark some of the shots are un usable as you are in able to see what is happening, also due to the auto focus on the camera and is stepping in and out of the light, a lot of the footage is blury. Some of the footage is also un usable as there are people in the shot and/or there is nothing happening (performance wise). We were also a little too un organised than we should have been meaning that the process was a lot slower that we would have liked, but overall the outcome was really good and the usable footage looks great.
 14/10/15
Today we looked over our footage from yesterday, putting them in folders of good and bad.
15/10/15
Today we looked over the footage some more and started to add it to our premier draft, we put the footage of us standing against the black wall with the lights gliding across our face on there, we looked at how it would look as our opening establishing shot. I personally think that the shots are great and it really works but the quality is really bad and I think it's too blurt to use, we are going to see after we have got all of our footage.
16/10/15
Today we designed what our make up would be like when we are in the club.
19/10/15
Today we prepared everything for our filming session in the club tomorrow. We printed off a shot ideas list, reprinted the lyrics and wrote a list of things we need to bring/remember. We also discussed everything in our group meeting and worked out how many volunteers we had.
20/10/2015
Today was our main/important filming day. We gathered 4 tripods, 5 cameras, the face paint and our bags of costumes and drove to town in Frankie's car. We arrived at Miya Nightclub at 1 o'clock and the manager (my auntie) let us in and gave us a tour showed us how to work the coloured light walls, lasers and sound. first of all we got some shots in front of the light walls because we thought it looked very impressive. We then put our neon make up and dark clothing on and got a wide variety of shots taken in front of the UV light. We removed that make up and put on 'normal' make up' and also wore coloured outfits. Frankie wore red (is a romantic and deadly colour representing her edgy/sporty personality), Olivia wore mint green (this can show strength and  wealth, representing her diva personality) and I wore white (This shade can represent purity and peace presenting my innocent persona). Some volunteers arrived but unfortunately not as many as we had hoped even though we are grateful to the people who did come and we did manage to get some good shots.
4/11/2015
Today we filmed outside in the dark with the theme of lights still being our focus. We used multicoloured glow-sticks, balloons and torches. With the help of some of our friends, we asked them to dance, have fun and be natural in front of the camera to portray youthfulness in our video. The time between the 20th and today we have been editing our music video with the shots that we had, i was working on the website, applying popular theories and techniques to what i was doing.
5/11/2015
Today we filmed a short, casual interview which we are going to open our halfway presentation with. We got our friend Issy to sit beside thee camera and ask us a few questions. Today Liv continued editing our music video, I continued on designing our website and Frankie started to put our halfway evaluation together.
27/11/2015
Today we spent a lot of time editing. We go feedback from others and improved what we could and also filled the gaps we had. We managed to finished our first draft and handed it over to Miss Brookes so she can show it to the classes next week.
30/11/2015
Today we made the last few changes to the website for it to be ready to show the classes for the first draft feedback. We also spent time on the digipak- we discussed how we wanted it to look, drew a plan and started editing a panel each.

Digipak...

Here is a section of the digipak that i created today in class based on the designs created by Olivia today. I struggled with making this as the images didn't quite scale to the same size making it hard to make the images flow and not look boxy to prevent this i had to crop and zoom into these this meant that they became a little stretched and distorted. the middle and bottom images colours are very similar in this picture as the camera seems to have picked up a lot of the blue pigmentation in the pink making it appear more purple than pink, and because of this i believe that it would look better if the orange image of Frankie should be in the middle breaking both of the images up.

Filming in the nightclub

Last month we went and filmed some of our music video in one of the local nightclubs, we were lucky to have this opportunity due to family relations owning the facility and being able to let us film one day during the week. Below is a quick video showing the layout and how we went about filming.
the video consists of Olivia filming Frankie and James in front of the light wall. I am teaching Rebecca a non media student how to use the camera so that she can help us film some scenes later on (she is the one controlling the camera) you can also see from this video how the club is empty and that we had control of everything, you can tell from the audio in this clip that we also had control of the sound and lighting as I am messing around with the Dj equipment.

Digipak themes

On Sunday I looked at possible themes that we could create with our digipak I tried to show as much synergy between our music video, singles, website, genre or music and everything else that we have created. Each image shown below represents a different theme.
The left hand image contains an image of us (Sweet Nothing) smiling posing and just messing about, the colouring for this photo is quite muted and not very vibrant. The background id a turquoise colour the image also has a vignetted effect applied which gives it a sort of less visible border separating  it from the other images on the digipak. it also features light flares, these go well with the name of our latest most publicised single Light Me Up. It also creates a visual link with our website.
The middle image is more simple it is of a black background and three light flares, each flare represents a member of the band with their distinctive colours (orange, pink and blue) it also links in well with the theme of the website single, music video and our pop genre.
The right hand image is the most pop influenced it contains images of the three girls in a tile format with their associated colours in the background and the band logo in the bottom left corner, this is the most vibrant and colourful of all there themes and suits the pop genre and target audience most.

Website photo changes

on our website we feature a page called 'The Girls' on this page are three large buttons these are off each band member looking straight at the camera, when the user scrolls over the image the photo changes to one of colour showing more of our individual personalities. bellow are some of the changes i made due to recent feedback from my other group members and people in my class.

Here as you can quite clearly see, i have changed the background colour from purple to blue. This is simply because i didn't realise at first that Liv's colour that her character is associated with is actually blue and not purple. This photo was chosen to represent her as it is cute, sassy and shows her personality of being the diva well.

The image on the left is one that we took nearer the start of the year, at this point we hadn't really found out who our personalities were as band members, we thought at first that it would be good if we were all doing a pose, we struggled to find something that was girly and fitted in the frame or didn't look to similar to the poses of the other girls. we decided to go with a peace sign this was because it is cute and quite sweet. Then it came to putting the photos onto the website we realised that the framing was slightly off and that it didn't work well with the others.
