Inspiration

This is a range of photos which show our inspiration for the theme of the music video. We are going with a bright lights and colours theme because the names of the song is 'Light Me Up' and this line is repeated many times in the song. This is an example of linking the visuals to the lyrics.
Below is a range of photos from different girl bands including, M.O, Fifth Harmony, G.R.L and girls aloud. These photos all express a similar style and this is what we want to go for. This style has to be suitable for our target audience so we have decided on clothes which are not too revealing but still look appropriate for a pop video and 'party-like'. In these photos the band member are wearing similar clothes to each other and this is something we are going to take into consideration.

Video Representations

In music videos according to theorists such as Lisa Milroy women are portrayed in very sexualised ways, here are two examples of ways that they could be shown.

1) The Burlesque, this image on the left shows a traditional burlesque dancer, the word originated from latin, meaning Joke/Mockery. A later use of the term refers to performances in a variety show. These were popular from the 1860s to the 1940s, often in cabarets and clubs, as well as theatres, and featured bawdy comedy and female stripteases.
There have been many videos where women have taken on this role, a more obvious music video would be Moulin Rouge, in this music video the girls are shown to be wearing minimalistic clothing representing the stereotypical look of a burlesque dancer.
The traditional outfits worn include things such as corsets, feather boas, fishnet stockings and top hats. now they have been adapted and changed to present the woman in things such as underwear, leather boots, corsets and big statement accessories
2) The stripper, These are represented in huge female roles such as Beyonce's videos, this can be seen to show dominance and power, but mainly portray them as sexualised objects.
The above image shows a pole dancer, in films this would most likely be represented in a strip bar and most likely stripping. common things that come up in 'stripper' music videos can include, 'open' crouch poses, close up bum shots, strobe lighting, Bra & G-strings. An example of this can be seen in Beyonce's video for her song partition..

lyrics

In the band Parade there are five members, in our group there are only 3 so we will have to share out the parts equally between us. bellow is a rundown of the lyrics marked in different colours so it is obvious to see who in the original band sings what part, when the band are all singing the text below will be white, when they are singing individually they are indicated by a colour.

00:09   You gotta light me up

00:11   I’m not feelin’ A romantic boy
00:13   But if you think you’re worth it
00:15   Light me up up up
00:19   Light me up up up

00:22   Got my girls with me running

00:24   We’re running free
00:24   Lovin’ life and we don’t look back

00:28   Yeah there’s gotta be some chemistry

00:30   For a boy to steer me off this track, yeah

00:34   I see what you do

00:35   Clocked your every move
00:36   Think your deal is sealed
00:38   But you’ve got so much to prove
00:40   Need to take me higher
00:42   Maybe i won’t deny ya

00:43   But it’s gonna take more

00:45   oooh

00:46   You wanna get me close
00:49   oooh
00:50   In your fantasy

00:52   In the dark hoá¹—efully pursuing what you see

00:54   You gotta, you gotta

00:56   You gotta light me up

00:58   I’m not feelin’ A romantic boy
01:00   But if you think you’re worth it
01:02   Light me up
01:04   When you get my head t-turnin’
01:06   Boy you’re learnin’, learnin’ , learnin’
01:08   Light me up
01:10   You gotta smoke me like a cigarette
01:12   and keep me burnin’, burnin’
01:13   Light me up up up
01:16   Light me up up up

01:20   Yeah we’re coming through

01:22   I’m seein’ you
01:24   You make your move But i don’t want that

01:26   I said you need to take me higher

01:27   Maybe i won’t deny ya
01:29   But it’s gonna take more
01:32   oooh
You wanna get me close
oooh
In your fantasy
In the dark hopefully pursuing what you see
You gotta, you gotta
You gotta light me up
I’m not feelin’
A romantic boy
But if you think you’re worth it
Light me up
When you get my head t-turnin’
Boy you’re learnin’, learnin’ , learnin’
Light me up
You gotta smoke me like a cigarette
and keep me burnin’, burnin’
Light me up up up
Light me up up up

You gotta light me up

Li Li
You gotta light me up
Fair play
Not many tried harder
Sorry but you gotta wait a little longer
I ain’t saying that tonight it’s game over
‘Cos i told ya

You gotta light me up

I’m not feelin’
A romantic boy
But if you think you’re worth it
Light me up
When you get my head t-turnin’
Boy you’re learnin’, learnin’ , learnin’
Light me up
You gotta smoke me like a cigarette
and keep me burnin’, burnin’
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up

Music video

This music video is really creative and i loved the way that it told a story through dance, i loved the way that the story almost develops backwards. it is almost like it is being rewound.
This video if for XOV's single Lucifer i really liked the way that the camera was constantly panning and the shots lasted quite a long time changing with the pace of the music. I thought that the use of the rewound footage was really clever and gave the video life, the way that the footage is slowed down is interesting as it makes the video feel more intense.

I really liked the idea of the narrative to this music video, I loved the way that the lyrics related to what you saw. I liked the idea of trying to advertise the band through the music video even more by showing their Twitter feed and talking about it a lot, this makes the audience want to check them out meaning that if they follow then they will be constantly updated with their news. Overall the video is really cute and serves its purpose well.

Our Music Video Pitch

The songs that we chose to use for our music video was called Mind over matter by PVRIS it is not the original song but a Alex Mescudi & Scout Remix this is because the original is quite slow and we prefered this version.
The visions we had for this music video...
here are a selection of photos that we took influence from.

^ lights ^
^ Colour ^
Mokissfm.png
^ The Look ^
our ideas for the music video is that it would contain a mix of narrative and performance, there would be multiple locations, including one in a night club and an inside carpark lot or sparse building area. There will be a theme of lights and colour this will work well with the heavy make up and the star image. we are planning on going in the direction of a band but as the song only features one main singer and all of the other band members play instruments it is going to be hard to incorporate the other two members and make them not look uncomfortable or awkward and have people questioning what they are actually doing.

We took influence from songs like Say Something by Karen Harding and Selena Gomez/Zedd's I want you to know. this is because they both feature lights and there are lots of amazing shots in both of these videos where lights and colour are a huge aspect to the video.

We also liked the idea of a light wall this can be seen in videos like against the currents gravity where the are stood in front of a white light wall.
We also looked at the song light me up by parade, we would still use a similar theme to the video but as this song is a little more pop and less electronic and edgy we would have to suit it to a different more younger audience.

We also liked this one

Star Profile

Taylor Swift

Taylor was first introduced to us in the year of 2004 when she was signed to Sony/ ATV Tree Publishing House. But soon after in the year 2006 when she was only 15 she left the company to release music of her own. She soon after released her first album 'Taylor Swift' which included songs like Teardrops on my guitar and our song which both became hits in america.
Taylor is originally from Pennsylvania in america where she was raised in the influence of country music. So it came to no surprise that the genre of her first music was country pop.
Taylor swift now has swayed away from the country scene and gone for a more indie edgier side of pop still containing some extreme pop songs in her album but some more slower deeper songs for example 'Style'
In Taylor's earliest of videos her style consists of mainly large dresses and cowboy boots and her signature curly hair. Most of her videos feature only her and a love interest they are very teenage girl like including very stereotypical teenage girl icons like the pink phone the painted nails and the extreme amounts of glitter.
Albums

Taylor swifts self titled             Beautiful Eyes                          Fearless was released in 2008
album released 2006                 released 2008
Speak now was released in        The album RED was released  The 1989 is her latest album it
2010                                           2012                                          was released in 2014
the albums show how taylor has changed over the years to keep her fans interested, is shows how her star image has changes over the years. Epecially in her latest album it shows how big she has become simply because the album doesn't contain her full name (only initials T.S) and the title. the album only shows half of her face this shows how she has become so well known that she doenst need to be shown on the album.

cross media convergence

Websites
Against the current are an alternative pop rock band, their website represents this through the use of colour, black is a colour often associated with the rock genre as it is dark, edgy and mysterious like most rock bands present themselves. The website features the band in the center of the screen this is to show them as the star. the website is very simple and dark which goes with their edgy look. It contains the links Home (this takes you to the screen shown above), Photo (this contains photos of the band at shoots and performing, helping to make the star image more well known), music, merch and concert these are all to help sell their band and market and advertise themselves.
This is the website for charlie puth it features him on the left hand side and links around his website. the website doesnt contain a large logo or title introducing the artist this shows that it is directed and bigger fans that are able to recognize the artist (it is the same for Against the current). The website features a link to pre order his album, all of his social media so that his fans can keep up with all of the latest news, a news panel, music, tour, photos and videos.
The Libertines are an Indie rock band, they are older and have been around for longer meaning that their audience are younger than someone like Against the Current, They also fall under the genre of Punk Rock and this is represented through the use of the logo and the design of it. they are in a sophisticated dress where most of them are pulling straight faces this shows that they are more of an indie band that can be compared to someone like The Arctic Monkeys. The website contains links to the album, the store, videos, tour and their boxset. it also has links to their itunes (another place that fans can purchase their music. they also have their social media links in the top left this is a way of getting the fans to interact with them more and keep everyone involved in all of the latest news.

possible music video choices

These are the songs that i like and think would be good to do.
We are the in crowd: The best thing

Against the current: Paralyzed
PVRIS: My House
All of these are songs are have female main singers which is good as we are a group of three girls, they are all quite edgy which means that we can make a fun fast pace rocky music video.

representations of women in music.

When it comes down to women in music there are only three types of representations

Divas'
These are the women that are portrayed as dominant and powerful the women that are shown in very sexual ways yet are still sophisticated. There are many close ups and low angle shots to make them look even more powerful. There is nothing to sexual and nothing inappropriate like in some other representations simply just slightly sexual dancing and a lot of laying about. In most videos 'Divas' are often wearing dark black clothing, crop tops, skirts and dresses.
Gangsta hoes'
Women represented in this manner are shown as 'rougher' and more feisty women, they wear very revealing clothing and lots of animal print. there is a lot of sex references and errotic imagery in their music videos. there is a lot of focus on their bodies mainly their bums and boobs to show them in an even more sexual way.

pop princess
These are the younger women whose target audience are mainly young girls and because of this they tend to wear more modest clothing with minimal makeup. they aren't shown in a sexual way at all.

ella eyre if i go

Whilst researching songs that we could use i ended up stumbling over Ella Eyres music video If I Go this video is shot in one room and is a performance based video, the amazing thing about this particular video, that allows it to break away from the crowd and stand out is that it is filmed in a gravity defying, rotating room. This is really cool because it keeps the audience intrigued so they don't switch the channel over. I then researched where and how it was filmed and found this link to a website for a company that makes large objects for hire at large events like olympic swimming galas.
The music video for if i go shows Ella and two other dancers performing on all four faces of a white wash room, moving seamlessly from floor to walls to ceiling. This was achieved by placing the artists in a set constructed within a circular machine designed by the company Artem it is capable 360 degrees up to a maximum speed of one whole spin in only 12 seconds as the camera rotates round with the room.
Here is the music video so you can see exactly what im talking about.

30 second break down

I have chosen to break down the first thirty seconds of two music videos, the first one that i have chosen to break down it Tinashe Ft Chris Brown 'Player' i have chosen this song because i believe that it contains an interesting music video.
The first shot is a wide angle shot of Tinashe in the center lying on  a white bed, the overall shot is very white, this makes her seem innocent and pure, giving off the connotations of peace. The genre of the song is a mix between Pop and R&B.
The second shot is very contrasting to the first, it is a much darker shot the artist chris brown is shown closer up looking down away from the camera, he is not wearing a top but chains piercings and a black hat and tattoos, this gives off the impression that he is less pure and possibly the complete opposite to her. Both the first and second shots show the artists name creating a star image.
The third but is a medium close up of Tinashe, it is the first real image you get to see of her, she is shown wearing minimalistic clothing of plain colour this reflects her pure personality. Written over the shot is the word Start, this is written in a typical digital font, giving the audience the felling that the video may be about something like a game or have digital aspects to it.

Then there is a repetition of the first but this time slightly closer up, it carries the same connotations as the first but this time that you see her in a more (insert word that means opening up the opposite to having her guard up kinda like vulnerable but not presenting her as week maybe aproachable) this allows the audience to connect with her more on a personal level.
The fifth shot is a close up of her looking down at the camera, here she is shown in much darker colours this makes her appear powerful especially with the way that she is looking at the camera with a tilted head almost like she is trying to figure it out. the background is white and as she is wearing black it makes it look like she has put her innocence behind her and now that it has started has become more aware and dominant.
this shot is another long shot this time she is standing walking towards the camera she is back dressed in her white shirt surrounded by glass and white walls, this makes her appear vulnerable, with the association of the word Fight over the top this emphasises this. although the fact that she is walking towards the camera shows that maybe she is ready to fight and she is stronger than the audience think.
this shot shows her in close up again, this time she is singing the words this allows the audience to create a mental connection with her and the song. it shows her as the star.
This shot is of a dancer/opponent the words written across his chest say 'round 1' this makes it appear that there will be multiple rounds where she is potentially going to have to fight the opponent. he is dressed in white and looking up this shows him to be the weaker one as in the last shot she was wearing black, a more powerful colour and looking down. The men could represent love interests fighting for her love and affection.
this shot shows her dancing she is looking at the camera, whilst circling it, this makes it appear like the camera has taken the eyes of the male and is showing what he sees.
